Trace: Town Creek Indian Mound and the Rise of Scientific Archaeology in North Carolina

In 1937, student archaeologist Joffre Lanning Coe began a 50-year project at Town Creek, NC, pioneering scientific archaeology in the state. Coe’s meticulous methods and published work transformed understanding of Native American cultures. Concurrently, local collector Pressley Rankin amassed significant artifacts, reflecting the era’s dual approaches to archaeology.

During a 2006-2007 survey of businesses in and around the Depot District of Raleigh, North Carolina, I visited an eclectic boutique on West Hargett Street called Southern Swank and was welcomed by proprietor Luva Zacharyj. Part gift shop, part art project, Southern Swank emerged to operate in other Raleigh locations over the years, selling mostly vintage clothing. An apparently inoperative web store still exists in 2024, while Zacharyj — who also works as a model — is active in the Chapel Hill arts scene. Within Southern Swank, tattoo artist Marco Sullivan operated a tattoo studio. Sullivan appears to still be active in Raleigh today.
